VARIOUS activities will be held today (not April 27 as erroneouosly reported in the story that appeared on page 3 yesterday) to culminate the 450th anniversary of the discovery of the Santo Niño, locally known as “kaplag.”
One of the activities is the street parade of 300 to 400 participants from the five contingents from Fuente Osmeña to the Basilica Minore del Santo Niño.
Together with the Sinulog performers, the Ati-Atihan and Dinagyang dancers will complete the “parade of the festivals.”
Motorists are reminded that some roads will be partially closed to traffic.
Cebu City Transportation Office Operations chief Joy Tumulak said the right portion of the road facing downtown Cebu City will be reopened immediately once the dancers have passed by. Other affected streets are portions of D. Jakosalem Street from Osmeña Boulevard to M.C. Briones Street, Magallanes Street from D. Jakosalem to Plaridel Street and P. Burgos Street from Legaspi to Magallanes Streets.
“Atong giawhag ang mga tawo nga likayan ning dalana kon mahimo (We advise the people to avoid these roads if possible),” Tumulak said.
At 10 a.m. today, a commemorative marker will be unveiled and a time capsule will be planted at the Santo Niño Pilgrim Center.
Labeled as a memorabilia, the time capsule will be revealed in 2065 during the 500th anniversary of Kaplag and the Augustinian Presence in the Philippines and the centennial anniversary of the Santo Niño Church as Basilica Minore.
After the street dancing, a Mass will be presided by Most Rev. Fr. Alejandro Moral, OSA, the Prior General of the Order of St. Augustine at the Pilgrim Center. The Kaplag reenactment will follow at 6:30 p.m.
Forty CCTO officers will be deployed to man the traffic. A fireworks display will conclude the day-long activities. /USJ-R Intern Margarette D. Managaytay
