TWO women were killed while three others were injured after a sport utility vehicle (SUV) collided with a cargo truck along the national road in Barangay Minolos, Barili in western Cebu last Friday.

PO2 Jotimar Tijano of the Barili police station identified the fatalities in the road accident as Sarah Luz Gutierrez of Barangay Tayud, Liloan northern Cebu and Dorothy Cantilla of Barangay Canduman, Mandaue City.

They died while being treated at a hospital in Cebu City.

Those injured were Hermeta Agustin, 17, of Barangay  Lawaan, Danao City; Mary Joy Mariquit, 18, of Barangay San Vicente, Liloan town; and Francis Mantuhar, 17, also from Liloan town.

According to police investigation, the victims, who were on a Toyota Avanza driven by Froilan Gutierrez were heading to Badian town from Liloan to go swimming in a beach there.

Tijano said in Barangay Minolos, as Gutierrez was negotiating a blind curve, he overtook another vehicle and encroached on the opposite lane.

It was already too late for him to get back to his lane and he collided head-on with a cargo truck loaded with live chicken heading for Cebu City.

Truck driver Jessie Dacula said the Toyota Avanza suddenly appeared on his lane as he negotiated a blind curve which resulted in the collision.

Both drivers, who were uninjured in the accident, were released from detention after they reached an amicable settlement with the victims’ relatives.
