Now on its 10th year, the “Gabii sa Kabilin” or Night of Heritage continued to lure in visitors who enjoyed the cultural dances and stage plays held in some of Cebu’s historic sites last Friday evening.

Right after the opening performance at Casa Gorordo, the visitors were treated to Cebuano music performed by an orchestra. Marie Yabo said it was her first time to attend the Gabii sa Kabilin and she enjoyed it a lot.

“Experiencing Gabii sa Kabilin is like experiencing your roots. It’s part of your identity of being a Cebuano,” she said.

Yabo said she saw some of the heritage sites in Cebu that were featured in the event that she didn’t know despite being born and raised in Cebu.

Jocelyn Gerra, executive officer of the culture and arts of Ramon Aboitiz Foundation, Inc. (RAFI), said the Gabii sa Kabilin gives visitors, especially the youth, a glimpse into the history of all things Cebuano.

In Plaza Parian, the people ate while watching a stage play in which the actors sang old Cebuano songs.

At the Yap-Sandiego ancestral house, the Sandiego Dancers performed ballet also to the tune of old Cebuano songs.

Art fairs and culinary exhibits where Filipino food, some trivia games and story telling regaled both children and adults alike.

Gerra said the Gabii sa Kabilin had grown in favor with both Cebuanos and visitors from neighboring provinces, like Bohol, and foreigners.

“And I think due to public support of the event, the local heritage workers and local government units, all of them would really make the event last longer and move forward,” she said.

Gerra said she hopes the Gabii sa Kabilin will expand to other towns of Cebu province.
