Veteran guard Josue Segumpan showed nerves of steel as he sank a mid-range jumper with just seconds remaining to lift the Worthy-University of the Visayas (UV) Green Lancers over bitter rivals Phinma-Southwestern University (SWU) Cobras, 76-72, in the 8th Cesafi Partner’s Cup last night at the Cebu Coliseum.
Though the match was merely a preseason game that was played in front of a sparse crowd, the two teams went at each other with the intensity of a playoff game with neither team giving the other an inch.
In the end though, it was Segumpan that made the difference as he calmly brought the ball up in transition, stopped on a dime and banked the shot in with 31.9 seconds left.
The Green Lancers then put up a terrific defensive wall that thwarted Cobras star Mac Tallo on his drive the next time down the court. UV forward Jerome Napao was then fouled and made both free-throws to extend UV’s lead to 76-72, 13.6 seconds left.
The Cobras then flubbed several three-point tries as time expired.
High-leaping guard Rey Suerte tallied 17 points, five rebounds and four assists in a stellar all-around show. Reinforcement Bassiere Sackour added 10 points and pulled down 11 rebounds while Napao had the same number of points.
Tallo, the reigning two-time Cesafi MVP, paced the Cobras with 15 but it was not enough to keep SWU from suffering their first defeat in three outings.
Meanwhilem the Mighty Sports-University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) Jaguars outlasted the Cebu Landmaster-University of San Carlos (USC) Warriors, 57-48, to even up their win-loss record at 2-2.
The two teams were tied at 15-all at the end of the first period but the Jaguars opened the second with an 11-2 run that was sparked by rookie Timothy Bakunawa’s five straight points to open up a 26-17 lead.
The Warriors tried to rally several times down the stretch but the Jaguars held their ground to pocket the win. RJ Dinolan, a member of last year’s Mythical Five, had a double-double of 16 points and 13 rebounds to pace the winners.
Rookie Jules Langres led USC, which fell to 1-4.
In the opening tiff, the Tyron Properties-University of Southern Philippines Foundation Panthers snatched their first victory of the tournament with a 69-64 win over the My Led Opto-Cebu Institute of Technology-University Wildcats.
Surprising wingman Lyndon Colina led all scorers with 20 markers.
