CHARGES of child abuse were filed by the Cebu City Prosecutor’s Office against a mother accused of physically abusing her five year-old daughter while under the influence of drugs.

Cebu City Prosecutor Jennifer Karen Alo-Leyson filed charges against the mother for allegedly violating Republic Act 7610 or the “Special Protection of Children Against Child Abuse, Exploitation and Discrimination Act.”

Her identity is being withheld to avoid identification of her daughter who’s a minor. Alo-Leyson said the child saw her mother sniff shabu in their home in the morning of June 9.

When the child scolded her mother for using the money sent to them by her father for buying shabu and sharing it with her friends in their house, the mother kicked her off their bed, Alo-Leyson said.

The child also said the mother burned her back with a mosquito repellent. The medical certificate obtained by the prosecutor’s office showed that the girl also sustained avulsion in her right arm as well as burns and physical injuries.

The child’s elder sister said in a sworn statement that their mother would become aggressive and destroy things whenever she’s high on drugs./UP Cebu Intern Patrick Byron G. Gattoc
