PROGRAMS to benefit senior citizens and cooperatives will be the priorities for second-term Third District Provincial Board Member Victoria “Tata” G. Corominas.
Corominas, who served as a board member from 2004 to 2010, said her inspiration for the advocacy for the senior citizens came from her father, former board member Andres Corominas.
“I will continue my advocacy to work and serve for the senior citizens. It’s more a thank you para sa pag-atiman nato (for their taking care of us) than sa huna-huna nga kitang tanan padong sad ana nga (thinking that all of us are also going to grow old and there will come a) time to become senior citizen ug usa pa sad sila ang nagbayad og buwis sila ang nagtrabaho. Then sila pud ang nagbuhi sa atong ekonomiya (and aside from that they are also among those who worked and paid taxes. Then, they are also the ones who contributed to the economy). So, it’s a way of paying them back for taking care of us mao na’y usa nga atong panghikusgan (it’s one of my priorities),” said Corominas during a press briefing on her first day at work at the Provincial Information Office.
On the financial assistance to senior citizens, she said she and her staff would have to study this plan further because they also have to consider the Cebu provincial government’s budget and the number of elderly eligible for the cash assistance.
She said since this is a province-wide undertaking, the number of elderly involved would require more surveys.
Aside from that she also plans to help cooperatives by streamline the accreditation ordinance so that it would suit the provincial government and nongovernment organizations (NGOs) and public organizations (POs) and ultimately, help all of them to work together efficiently.
