Global Cebu: Sorry, home pitch is in Manila

Global Cebu FC has asked for the understanding of its Cebuano fans who won’t be able to see them live in action when they compete in the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Cup 2018.

Global posted a message on its Facebook page explaining that it nominated the Cebu City Sports Center (CCSC) as its home pitch for the AFC Cup, which will be played in a home-and-away format.

However, the tournament organizers instead decided for Global to play their home games at the Rizal Memorial Stadium in Manila.

“We seek understanding from our supporters, as we hope to see you in Manila for our AFC Cup matches,” stated a portion of Global’s post on its FB page.

The team would have wanted to play in Cebu since it is here that they gathered their biggest number of supporters as evidenced by the inaugural staging of the Philippines Football League (PFL), where it finished as a runners-up to the Ceres Negros FC.

During last year’s PFL, about 5,000 paying spectators trooped to the CCSC to watch Global’s first home game here in Cebu against Ceres, which was dubbed as “Visayas El Clasico.”

In all their home games in Cebu, the number of paying spectators was oftentimes more than 2,000.

Global will open up its campaign against Thanh Hoa FC, the 2017 V.League 1st runner-up, in Hanoi, Vietnam, this Saturday.

Global has been drawn into Group G alongside FLC Thanh Hoa, a Vietnamese football club, Bali United of Bali, Indonesia and Yangon United, a Burmese football club.
