UV still too much for USJ-R in Mingla hoops

THE three-time defending champions University of the Visayas (UV) Green Lancers debuted in dominant fashion as they destroyed the University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) Jaguars, 104-76, in the Minglanilla Mayor’s Cup Inter-Collegiate Christmas Basketball League last Sunday at the Minglanilla Sports Complex.

Fresh off their stint in the Philippines Collegiate Champions League, where it emerged as the regional champion, UV did not miss a beat and took control of the game early behind the five three-pointers of team skipper Josue Segumpan, who finished with a game-high 24 points.

Gileant Delator, who was also named to the Mythical Five of the PCCL regionals, added 16 while forwards Michael Maestre and Ubert Villaceran made their presence felt inside as they each had 13 points.

The game was billed to be a rematch of the Cesafi finals last October but it failed to offer much in the way of competition with the Jaguars no longer having star guard, Jaybie Mantilla.

RJ Dinolan led USJ-R with 19 points.

In the second game, the University of Cebu Webmasters got their second straight win after they edged the University of Southern Philippines Foundation Panthers, 83-79.
