Two inmates volunteered to fix the television antenna of the Lapu-Lapu City Jail. Little did the jail guards know that George Jumao-as and Richard Inot had an escape plan in mind.
The two inmates bolted from their detention but it didn’t take long for authorities to recapture them.
Jumao-as is facing rape charges, while Inot is charged with robbery.
Deputy Jail Warden Francisco Pojol said in a phone interview that the two inmates were discovered missing at 1:30 p.m. last Thursday.
Pojol said the two inmates volunteered to repair the facility’s television antenna. But shortly after they climbed the roof, the two could no longer be found.
It was later discovered that two jumped from the roof then climbed the facility’s perimeter fence to escape.
A team of recovery personnel rushed to sitio Son-ong, barangay Mactan after receiving a tip from Jumao-as’ relatives that he was spotted in the area.
Jumao-as was cornered in the area about 30 minutes after the escape.
The Mactan police, headed by Chief Insp. Conrado Manatad, was alerted of the escape.
It was past 11 p.m. when operatives of the Mactan police arrested Inot in a shanty with some friends.
Pojol said an investigation is underway to determine who will be held liable for the escape and what additional penalty to be imposed against the two inmates.
