Ahong partners with pharmacies for release of maintenance meds to seniors in Lapu

LAPU-LAPU CITY, Cebu — Senior citizens in Lapu-Lapu City would no longer have to worry about their maintenance medicines.
Mayor Junard “Ahong” Chan said his administration is partnering with pharmacies to make the release of maintenance medicines to senior citizens convenient and accessible.
Chan said that he was given authority by the Lapu-Lapu City Council, through an approved resolution, to enter into a Memorandum of Agreement with some of the pharmacies in their city.
“Kabalo ta kung atong edad, magkatigulang ta, manggawas atong mga sakit. So, mao na nga ang atong vice mayor and the council, nipasar sila ug resolusyon nga ang mayor makapirma, nga kanang tambal pwede natang mokuha sa mga private pharmacy,” Chan said.
Mayor Chan announced his good news for senior citizens in a speech which he delivered after the flag raising ceremony at the City Hall grounds on Monday, October 2.
His announcement was also the city’s contribution to the Elderly Filipino Week celebration scheduled from October 1 to 7, 2023. This year’s celebration carries the theme of “Older Persons: Resilience for Nation-Building.”
Chan said that under the agreement, the city government would partner with pharmacies for the release of maintenance medicines to senior citizens.
In addition, Chan said that Island Central Mall in Barangay Ibo has also agreed to accommodate senior citizens in their movie houses for free.
“Atong ipahibawo sa mga senior citizen, libre ang inyong pagtan-aw sa sine sugod sa alas-11 sa buntag. Ako gyud gi-istorya ang tag-iya sa sinehan, ang ICM. Ingon sila nga diba 20 percent, ako silang giingnan nga wala na maanad ug discount ang mga senior citizen kun dili libre ang ilang naandan,” he added.
Meanwhile, Councilor Annabeth Cuizon, the chairperson of the City Council’s social services committee, has expressed her support on the amendment of the Centenarian Act of 2016 to also extend cash gifts to octogenarians.
Senate Bill No. 2028, “Expanding the Coverage of Centenarian Act” that was authored by Senator Ramon ‘Bong’ Revilla Jr. was already passed on third and final reading in the Senate.
The said bill grants senior citizens, who already reached the age of 80, cash gifts amounting to P10,000 and P20,000 for those who are already 90 years old. Centenarians will continue to get P100,000. / dcb
