Bar exams open today for 7,000 law grads

AT least  7,146 law students around the country are scheduled to take the bar exams starting today at the University of Sto. Tomas in Manila and in the next three Sundays.

Supreme Court (SC) Associate Justice Teresita Leonardo-de Castro is the chairperson for this year’s examinations.

The bar, the only licensure exam that is not administered by the Professional Regulations Commission, will cover eight subjects: political law, labor law, civil law, taxation, mercantile law,  criminal law, remedial law, and legal and judicial ethics

The exams will also asses the graduates’ ability to communicate in English. The High Court, in a statement, reminded examinees to use sign pens or fountain pens with permanent blue, or black ink. Answers for the essay-type questions have to be written in long hand.

Examinees are also required to wear their color-coded IDs at all times within the UST campus, to use clear plastic bags, and to deposit electronic gadgets with the security personnel at the entrance.

Executive Justice Gabriel Ingles of the Court of Appeals Cebu Station advised examinees to do their best and to pray harder.

“My usual advice for bar examinees is this: Pray as if everything depends on God and study as if everything depends on you. The two go together,” he said.
