THE Sykes Pioneers scored what by far the season’s biggest upset as they stunned the defending champions Convergys Converters, 65-62, last Saturday in the Elite Classic division of the 12th City Sports Club-Cebu (CSC-C) E-League for Basketball at the CSC-C Gym.
Sykes came into the match winning just three of its first six games but held its ground against a mighty Convergys squad behind Melecio Villaplaza, who piled up 13 points, 10 rebounds, three steals and an assist.
It was actually a total team effort for the Pioneers as Paul Sanchez, Robby Ruiz and Gerald Bien Galarido delivered nine markers apiece. Sherwin Anghay and Vernie Jose Diotay added seven points each.
Kenneth Dysam fired a game-high 26 points, Jay Aldene Batino tallied 10 but the Converters heavily felt the offensive woes of Sherwin Emmanuelle Resilla, who was held scoreless.
It was Convergys’ second defeat in seven games.
In the EVO League, the Supportsave Dragons remained unstoppable, staying unbeaten in seven games by blowing out the Author Solutions Inc. (ASI) Hardbacks, 81-58, behind another solid outing of Niño Belande, who produced 21 points, 12 rebounds, three steals and two assists.
Janille Kristianne Bantilan chipped in 14 markers, while Germaine Jo Guarisma and Edmon Paradiang also submitted twin digits for the Dragons with 11 markers each.
Jose Paolo Diputado had 17 points for the Hardbacks, who slid to 4-3 (win-loss).
Meanwhile, after tasting their first defeat the last time out, the QBE Generals barely got back on track as they nosed out the Contact Solutions Flying Lemurs, 79-78.
Johrey Girasol tallied 23 points, Christopher James Durango and Philip Villarin added 13 each as QBE bounced back from a 47-61 loss to Tech Mahindra to improve to 8-1.
Jerard Dela Cerna scored 26 in the Flying Lemurs’ eighth defeat in 11 games.
The Results Spartans, on the other hand, tripped the United Health Group Cobras, 76-72, for their third victory in eight outings.
Jude Arthur Go led the Spartans with 20 points, Winston Pacaldo wound up with 19 points, 15 rebounds and five blocks, Jade Seno added 11 points, while Carl Atay and Jonathan Mangubat had 10 makers each.
The Cobras, who fell to 2-5, was led by Joseph Juariza’s 22 markers.
