The University of San Carlos (USC) Warriors collected 19 gold medals yesterday to grab the opening day lead in the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (CESAFI) track and field competition at the Cebu City Sports Center (CCSC).
The USC collegiate and secondary tracksters also added 14 silver and 14 bronze medals while rival University of Cebu (UC) Webmasters stayed in second place with a 13-14-8 haul. The University of Southern Philippines-Foundation (USP-F) is at third spot (4-5-6) while the Sacred Heart School Ateneo de Cebu (3-4-2) rounded out the top 5.
Roneth Ayuda led USC with three gold medals from the women’s 100m and 400m hurdles and high jump while Jessielou Rebalde chipped in two gilts from the 200m and 400m sprints.
The other collegiate gold winners from USC were Melody Perez (3,000m women), Maria Rica Cabarrubias (3k walkathon), Jouie Bajan (5k walkathon), Jason Naces (400m sprint), Geniecel Saballa (1,500m women) and Jellus Mae Paderez (discus throw women).
Meanwhile, Seth Abram Pilapil, Mary Joy Loberanis and Stephen Pekit-pekit won two golds each in the high school division for USC.
Pilapil dominated the 200m and 400m runs; Loberanis snatched golds in the 1,500m and 3,000m runs while Pekit-pekit topped the boys 110m hudles and high jump. John Dean Durano (shot put) and John Joseph Berdin (discus throw) won a gold each.
The Webmasters won seven secondary gold medals and six collegiate gilts.
Children of Asia Games bronze medalist Samantha Jane Limos was the only UC athlete to win two golds. She dominated the 200m and 400m sprints.
Other UC gold medalists were Rozel Ardiente (3,00m steeple chase), Jerald Berengel (110m hurdles), Benjamin Reynes (200m), Angel Mark Sicad (discus throw), Keith Lawrence Robredo (high jump) and Prince Joey Lee (10k run) in the college division. UC’s othjer secondary golds come from Linmart Mata (1,500m), Martin Cris Ablanque (3,000m steeple chase), Elyzza Mae Salinas (100m hurdles), Mart Chan Torregosa (400m hurdles) and Crystal Villanueva (high jump).
USP-F’s gold medalists were John Cliff Debolusan (1,500m run), Mark Batiancila (400m hurdles), Charine Areja (shot put) and Jessie Klien Resaba (shot put) while SHS-AdC’s
gold medalists were Shanelle Demilys Siasoyco (shot put and discus throw) and Pearl Angeline Abellar (400m hurdles).
The remaining events will be completed today at the same venue.
