NLEX Road Warriors quick to adapt to new coach Guiao
AS THE NLEX Road Warriors slowly round into form heading to the start of the new PBA season, it’s unmistakable that new head coach Yeng Guiao has his fingerprints all over their shift in playing style.
Playing the brand of basketball that Guiao has had success with in a colorful two-decade career, the Road Warriors had six players score in double-figures during their 99-72 rout of the Cebu Landmasters in Recoletos Invitational Cup on Wednesday night at the University of San Jose-Recoletos Coliseum here in Cebu City.
Guiao said this is all by design and gave the players credit for quickly embracing his pass-heavy system that has made stars out of PBA journeymen and second-stringers.
“The team has been adapting well to the new system. I’m very happy with the developments so far. The Cebu games will serve to establish the culture and system even more,” said Guiao, whose move from Rain and Shine to NLEX sent shockwaves throughout the basketball-loving archipelago.
Guiao admitted that the system that the Road Warriors is utilizing is more or less the same as the one he had with his previous squad – one that puts emphasis on sharing the rock and scoring duties. The seven-time champion coach added that it will produce the same results.
In Wednesday’s game, Bradwyn Guinto led the Road Warriors with 13 points while Garvo Lanete, Sean Anthony and Jonas Villanueva added 12 each.
Raul Soyud chipped in 11 while Carlo Lastimosa finished with 10.
“It’s the same system. It will produce the same results. It’s designed to share the responsibility with the whole team and not just a few players.”
With the new season just a few weeks away, Guiao and the Road Warriors are taking the time to bond in the land made famous by lechon and danggit. And he reports that all is hunky-dory.
“It is also a confidence builder and a bonding experience for the team. The game versus the local Cebu teams is an opportunity to test ourselves under different conditions. All is going well so far.”
