Efren Lariosa, the 26-year-old inmate of Cebu Provincial Detention and Rehabilitation Center (CPDRC) who escaped from the Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center (VSMMC) while being admitted for treatment of his stage 4 cancer of the minor salivary gland last Saturday, was recaptured on Monday night after almost two days of manhunt.

Based on their initial investigation, acting CPDRC warden Dr. Gil Macato said they suspect one of Lariosa’s visitors may have smuggled in an Allen wrench, which he used to free himself of the leg chain attached to the hospital bed.

Macato said Lariosa escaped while the guards were changing shifts althought they are also conducting a separate investigation on the guard who’s supposed to be on duty at the time of his escape.

“He (Lariosa) is suffering from Cancer which is at the late stage. Maybe he felt the need to be free so he escaped,” said Macato.

Lariosa was caught in the boundary between Barangay Vito and Barangay Candulawan in Minglanilla, 14 kilometers south of Cebu City, at around 10 p.m. and is currently in isolation at the CPDRC.
