THE possibility of another premier volleyball competition in Cebu is getting a warm reception.
Brando Velasquez, an official of the Cebu Provincial Sports Commission (CPSC), said there’s a chance that a province-wide volleyball tournament will be held in Cebu after the CPSC came up with the Cebu Governor’s Cup Basketball Tournament, which will start next month.
“There’s a big possibility that we will have a volleyball tournament. Still, there will be an age limit since it’s a grassroots program,” Velasquez said.
Cebu Institute of Technology-University mentor Armel Loon said it would be a big help for student athletes to not only have an avenue to show their potentials but also to have a chance to acquire quality education if they will be able to suit with big universities.
Cebu had the GUVS Cup as a project of former Cebu governor Gwen Garcia. It ran for nine editions before closing shop in 2013.
“Aside from that, since the different municipalities and cities will also host games, it can also help promote their culture and tourism,” Loon added.
Former University of San Jose-Recoletos player and now Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu assistant coach Jamel Macasamat said more volleyball tournaments will not only help players but also the coaches.
“”It will definitely help improve players and it will also help students to divert their attention to sports and for the coaches, it will help them to be more determined to train players since their hard work will eventually pay off,” Macasamat shared.
