MAO BA?

TIT FOR TAT

A municipal mayor in the province who demanded for the removal of his town’s chief of police (COP) is facing a lot of flak from residents.

The mayor even arranged for a meeting with Police Regional Office in Central Visayas director Chief Supt. Noli Taliño to ask for the relief of the COP.

However, the mayor’s move is being questioned since it is widely known in his town that he is angry at the police for arresting a government employee over illegal drugs.

“Murag nihimo (ning) lakang ni mayor kay nasuko siya nga ang iyahang empleyado giaresto,” a source said.

(It seems that the mayor took this step because he is angry that his employee got arrested.)

DISQUALIFIED CANDIDATE

A local officer of the Commission on Elections (Comelec) has initially opted to stay quiet on the issue of the mayoral dispute in Bantayan town, saying he respected the position taken by Gov. Hilario Davide III that tended to favor unseated mayor Arthur Despi.

Davide earlier said the Comelec should have declared Despi an independent candidate instead of disqualifying him since it was clear he won in the last elections.

But the official said the Comelec is right and has basis in disqualifying Despi since the latter was disowned by the party that he had listed as his party affiliation in his certificate of candidacy. This means Despi’s COC was defective from the beginning, he insisted.
