ALREADY the winningest team with five championship titles tucked under its belts, Convergys looks to further cement its lofty status in the league as they gun for history in this year’s Tanduay Athletics E-Leagues for Basketball Season 13, which gets underway today at the City Sports Club-Cebu Gym.
Champions for two straight years, the Converters begin their quest for a historic third straight title when they tangle with the Teletech-Telstra in the 4:30 p.m. main game of today’s double-header.
Clashing in the 3 p.m., first game right after the grand opening ceremonies are the Contact Solutions and the Tech Mahindra Tech Mighties.
“We started practicing late but hopefully we can adjust right away especially our seven new players,” said Convergys’ Ken Dysam in the league’s press launching yesterday at City Sports Club-Cebu.
With former Letran guard Franz Dionne Dysam in tow, the Converters further strengthened their backcourt with the addition of Ildefonso Bulangis.
Divided into two groups, this year’s tournament will have 20 participating teams. Composing the Elite Classic are Convergys, last year’s losing finalists Lexmark Stallions, Teleperformance All Stars, Accenture Sharks, Wipro Tigers, ePerformax Reds, Sykes Pioneers, Teletech-Telstra and the Supportsavc Dragons.
The Dragons were elevated from the EVO League to the Elite Classic after going 16-0 (win-loss) last season en route to winning the division’s championship crown.
Comprising this year’s EVO League are the Author Solutions Inc. Hardbacks, Contact Solutions, Tech Mahindra, The Results Spartans, Teletech Titans, QBE Generals, Dynnino Jets (formerly Dynnino Raptors), Optum Knights (formerly United Health Group Cobras), Streamline Kangaroos
(new team) and Shearwater Health Crusaders (new team).
“It will be tough to call in the Elite Classic. I don’t know how the new players are going to mesh with their teams. In the EVO League, the Tech Mahindra and Dynnino are expected to have a good run,” said tournament director Rey Fuentes.
Supervised by newly appointed league commissioner Danny Aying, each division will a single round-robin in the eliminations with the top seven advancing to the playoffs. The eighth playoff slot will be determined through lottery.
Number one to four seeds will enjoy twice-to-beat incentives in the first round of playoffs.
The semifinal and championship rounds will be played in a best-of-three series in the tournament presented by Tanduay Athletics and co-presented by Marriott Cebu City and Winner’s Circle. The league’s major sponsors are Zenovia International, TUF barbershop and Mesa.
Highlighting today’s opening ceremonies is the selection of the 2017 Miss E-League to be hosted by 2012 Miss Cebu Pierre Anther Infante.
