WALK THE TALK

After the shame campaign in Barangay Pajo, Lapu-Lapu City, paved the way for a debate on human rights and the strategies to end the illegal drug problem, Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña declares he is also willing to implement the same campaign in the city.

The mayor even wants to take it one step further by demolishing the identified drug dens instead of just spray-painting shame messages on their doors.

Netizens mostly back Mayor Tom’s plan, but others caution him about the legal implications of such a move. Some said the plan is long overdue, while others challenge the mayor to walk the talk.

Renan Oklang commented, “I’m not sure if spray-painting on doors of private homes is legal, let alone demolish them. However, I know that confiscating private properties of suspects is legal. Mayor Tom should consult a lawyer first before making a move.”

Bob Wely Bernabe said, “Don’t just talk about your plans, Mayor. Do it so these people will believe you.”

Larry Gantalo, meanwhile, has doubts. “How can you demolish these structures when in fact, drug dens are huge and are made of concrete materials? These aren’t shanties.”

Mitch Uy has a suggestion: “Mayor, there are so many barangays that are spots for illegal drug trade. Try to conduct random drug tests to people, barangay officials and police officers. Prove to us you can solve this problem.”
