The University of the Visayas (UV) pulled off another big upset, this time shocking former champions University of Cebu (UC), 2–1, in the collegiate division of the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) football tournament yesterday at the Cebu City Sports Center.
The victory put UV on top of the team standings together with the defending champion University of San Carlos (USC). Both teams have two victories, one draw and one defeat for seven points.
Last Sunday, UV also caught a big fish when it beat USC, 1–0.
John Vargas, who scored the lone goal versus USC last Sunday, again delivered for UV as he scored the team’s first goal in the 70th minute.
UC’s Rommelito Gesulga scored the equalizer at the 84th minute.
But UC, the 2015 champion, suffered a big blunder on the defensive end in the final minutes of the match, paving the way for Andrew Duaso to score the game-winning goal for UV.
UC dropped to 0-2-2 (win-loss-draw).
University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) and University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF), meanwhile, figured in a scoreless draw in the other collegiate match.
USJ-R is seated at second place with six points, while USPF is at the bottom of the standing with two points.
