Dumaguete City—Team Cebu City Niños held on to the lead and emerged as the inaugural champions of the Batang Pinoy Visayas Games.

The Niños, who took the lead in the penultimate day, finished the week-long multi-sporting meet with 46 gold medals, along with 59 silvers and 69 bronze medals.

Hosts Dumaguete finished second with a 41-29-44 (gold-silver-bronze) tally while Cebu province rounded off the top three with a 39-37-44 haul.
The Niños finished the competition strong as they won 11 more gold medals in the final day yesterday.

Seven gold medals came from Cebu City’s arnis team while two came from the chess team.

Cebu City also topped girls basketball with a 56-48 victory over Cebu province in the championship game at the Lamberto Macias Sports Complex while the table tennis team added one gold.

Cebu City got the bulk of its golds from its powerhouse dancesport team, which swept the competition winning 10 out of 10 events.

Its karatekas also performed well, winning 11 gold medals while its tracksters managed eight and arnisadors seven.

Cebu City’s gold medalists in arnis, played at the Holy Cross High School, were Jim Lou Suycano (lightweight), Joshua Miguel Cañete (heavyweight), Kurt John Cristobal (middleweight contact padded, stick continuous), Sharmine Faith Lazaga (lightweight), Hillary Talledo (middleweight), and Nigel Grace Apostol (contact padded middleweight).

Eljey Dan Tormis won his second gold medal in table tennis after he topped the cadet boys’ singles event at the Negros Oriental Convention Center (NOCC). He also won in the mixed pair event last Wednesday together with Krizzia Lauren Acaylar.

Jave Merick Peteros and Edelyn Vosotros were Cebu City’s gold winners in chess.

Darliene Ragasajo scored 16 points to lead the Niños to 56-48 victory over Cebu Province in the gold medal match in girls’ basketball.

“We are very pleased of the athletes’ performance,” said Cebu City Sports Commission chairman Edward Hayco.

A total of 2,504 athletes competed in the weeklong meet for athletes aged 15 years and below that serves as a qualifier for next year’s Batang Pinoy National Finals.
