UNIVERSITY of San Carlos (USC) Lady Warriors head coach Grace Antigua doesn’t want to get too excited about the team’s Game 1 win over her former team University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) in the Cesafi women’s volleyball championship.
Even if her team scored a 25-22, 14-25, 25-18, 25-19 victory against USJ-R yesterday at the University of Southern Philippines Foundation gym, Antigua believes there’s still room for improvement, especially after seeing her wards drop the second set by a mile.

“There’s still something lacking. We still have to work on our first touch,” said Antigua, adding that some of her players are still having court jitters as shown in their performance in set number two.

But Antigua commended the efforts of her team, which is looking to end a six-year title drought in the Cesafi.

“At least we improved our service. I hope we can show the same effort in Game 2,” said Antigua, who is aiming for her first title with USC since leaving the USJ-R camp after last year’s Cesafi season. “I know [my players] are very determined.”

Meanwhile, Southwestern University (SWU)-PHINMA took Game 1 of the men’s finals with a 26-24, 26-24, 25-21 drubbing of the University of the Visayas (UV).

The Game 2 of the best-of-three championship series will be on Saturday at the same venue.
