Miss Universe: Steve Harvey was right; Philippines won national costume competition

CEBU CITY, Philippines — Miss Universe clarified in a tweet that Steve Harvey did not commit a mistake when he announced that the Philippines won in the national costume competition. Miss Universe, in its twitter handle @missuniverse, said Gazini Ganados won in the National Costume competition.

The tweet reads “@IAmSteveHarvey had it right. Miss Universe Philippines Gazini Ganados is the winner of the #MissUniverse2019 National Costume competition. Congratulations Gazini!”

During the coronation night, Harvey, who made news when he announced the wrong Miss Universe winner in 2015, read that Philippines won the national costume title.

But when the camera shifted to the right, Miss Malaysia was seen beside Harvey.

Miss Malaysia Shweta Sekhon then told Harvey, “It’s not Philippines, it’s Malaysia.”

Harvey made a joke about the mix up referring to the 2015 mistake.

But it looks like Harvey really announced the right winner this time.

The Philippines’ national costume was designed by Cary Santiago, master couturier from Cebu.

But the Miss Universe Organization (MUO) later announced through a tweet that the Philippines won in the national costume competition.

MUO said Steve Harvey did not make a mistake by announcing that the Philippines won.

“The Miss Universe Organization further said, “Miss Universe Philippines Gazini Ganados is the winner of the Miss Universe 2019 National Costume competition. As part of the broadcast, we also featured Miss Universe Malaysia Shweta Sekhon’s national costume. No mistakes regarding the national costume winner were made by the host Steve Harvey, the prompter or production.”/dbs
