UP Cebu raises P1.3 million for production, donation of PPEs

CEBU CITY, Philippines – The University of the Philippines Cebu (UP Cebu) raised over P1.3 million worth of funds for the production of personal protective equipment (PPE) for frontliners.

UP Cebu in its website announced that they collected cash donations amounting to P1,380,996.34 as of May 18, 2020, which were spent to make over 6,012 face shields, and 420 PPE suits.

The face shields and PPE suits, in turn, were donated to various hospitals, health institutions in Cebu, and other workers at the frontlines and residents at the Cebu Provincial Detention and Rehabilitation Center (CPDRC).

The donation came from various private groups and individuals.

“In spite of this unprecedented situation COVID-19 has put the world in, we are grateful to our community who looks into the welfare of our medical frontliners. This gives us hope and resilience,” the university stated.

UP Cebu houses a fabrication laboratory (Fablab) that was activated last March for the production of face shields and other protective gear for health workers and other frontliners combatting the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic.

As of May 19, tally from the Department of Health in Central Visayas (DOH-7) showed that Cebu, as an island, has a total of 2,093 confirmed COVID-19 cases.
