POLICE arrested a 24-year-old jewelry appraiser after she admitted making up a story that the pawnshop where she worked in barangay Ermita, Cebu City was robbed.

Grace Jasangas, 24, a native of North Cotabato and temporarily residing in barangay Labangon, called the Carbon Police Station last Tuesday and reported that two men robbed the Dinero Pawnshop and Jewelry.

PO3 Antonio Tejero and three other policemen rushed to the pawnshop, but they became suspicious when Jasangas’ statements were inconsistent with those of the people in nearby establishments.

Tejero said Jasangas led them to sitio Bliss in barangay Labangon where the supposed robbers live. Jasangas claimed she knew the robbers.

Tejero left his cellphone number with the neighbors of the purported robbers.

At around 3 p.m., a man called PO3 Tejero telling him that he will return the “stolen” jewelry.

They agreed to meet. When the policeman arrived in the meeting place, he found a mug stuffed with assorted jewelry worth P1.5 million.

Tejero said he suspected that the person who called him was one of Jasangas’ cohorts. Tejero said they eventually convinced Jasangas to tell the truth.

Jasangas refused to comment on her arrest. Qualified theft charges will be filed against her, police said.
