The Cebu City Sports Commission (CCSC) yesterday formed a team that will oversee and implement the grassroots Strength and Conditioning program that is geared towards developing the full potential of the local athletes.
CCSC chairman Edward Hayco informed Cebu Daily News yesterday that the team will be headed by Dr. Rhoel James Timothy Dejano with Pio Solon, Commissioner Suzette Gocotano and Abellana National School football head coach Francis Ramirez serving as members of the team.
The first meeting of the team was held yesterday at the Abellana National School.
“We see it as a landmark program and will be a turning point for public school athletes to have a rare opportunity to be trained by specialists in the field of strength and conditioning, sports nutrition, injury prevention and sport science,” Hayco said. “The team will create a program specifically designed for public school coaches and athletes. The program will be comprehensive and long-term.”
He also said a workshop will be conducted for 400 public school coaches on Nov. 30 with an overview of the program’s principles and theory with practical application.
The newly formed team will oversee the actual implementation of the program initially at the Abellana Special School for Athletes involving 300 participants.
Hayco added that the program will eventually be taught to all the public school coaches and athletes over the next three years.
Regarding the budget for this program, Hayco said it will be minimal as the members of the commission will be doing this voluntarily.
“All volunteers. Isn’t that great?” Hayco remarked. “We will inculcate a culture of volunteerism just like in dancesports. Teaching back what they learned and cascade it to other schools. Culture takes years to develop but we’re getting there.”
