Korean driver, a housewife, considers Cebu ‘second home’
“WE won’t evade responsibility.”
This was assured by the lawyer of the Korean woman who drove the van which killed a traffic enforcer outside the Gaisano Country Mall last week.
Lawyer Maria Janel Miral told Cebu Daily News her client , a housewife, was still “in shock” over the accident, and can’t stop from crying whenever she passes the site on Governor Cuenco Avenue.
“She has always been a careful driver and more so whenever her children are with her. On that day, she was with her son,” the lawyer said.
She said the Korean Sun Kyung Heo was never involved in a traffic accident before the July 1 incident.
She said they have “open communication” with the family of Citom traffic aide Ma. Teresa Bascones, but can’t disclose what kind of assistance has been given.
“We have been supporting their immediate needs since the occurrence of the accident.” she said.
The vigil wake is being held in St. Peter’s Memorial Chapel in Imus Street.
Sun was described as a housewife and “devoted mother” who drives her children to school.
Their family has been living in Cebu City since 2007 and consider the city their “home away from home.”
She and her husband support several civic organizations and their causes, the lawyer added.
“It is on this premise that she has never considered evading her responsibilities and is more than willing to see this case through,” Miral said.
Sun posted bail of P30,000 and is facing a criminal charge of reckless imprudence resulting to homicide.
“All they want is for the people to know that if she did cause the accident, she is profoundly sorry for it and never intended for it to happen,” the lawyer said.
NO COMMENT
The family and relatives of Bascones are still mourning her death.
When CDN visited her wake yesterday, the victim’s mother didn’t grant interviews and said she was still disoriented.
However, she would stop other relatives at the wake from answering questions of reporters.
Among the visitors who stopped by to pay their respects, based on the logbook, were Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama before he left for the United States and former mayor Tomas Osmeña, aside from Citom officers and staff.
Funeral wreaths were sent mostly by government transportation agencies and Gaisano Country Mall.
Bascones’ burial is set on Sunday at the Carreta Cemetery.
A day before that, her remains will be brought to the Citom office where the city government will hold Mass to honor a traffic enforcer who died in the line of duty.
