Arts and Culture Life!

Art in our midst

With the mall as its canvas, contemporary art makes a mark and engages shoppers in Cebu. Ongoing until Dec. 15, Art Park exhibits the stonecast sculptures and installations of Juan Guido Lubanga, one of Cebu’s brilliant artists, around the parks of Ayala Center Cebu.

Lubanga’s Public Art Sculptures Emanating the shifting feel of kinetic sculpture on water, “The Cyclists” located at the fountains of Ayala Terraces are 26-inch by 42-inch wide statue pieces resembling real-life bicycle riders. Inspired by today’s fast-paced lifestyle, the installation promotes not only physical wellness but sustainable living as well.

“THE CYCLISTS”

Located right above the water level of The Terraces fountain area, “The Hands” reflects a splitting image of a person’s pointed finger. An allegory to the context of rising through social and political adversities, the artwork gives life to the cliché “There’s no other way but up.”

Evoking playful imagery, the “Little People” provides a visual anchor for large spaces, emanating a monumental, yet non-intimidating feel in its volume and heft.

Installed at the fountain area of the new expansion wing roof deck, “The Giant’s Feet,” as regarded by most spectators, is a piece designed to mirror the Christian scripture of Jesus walking on water, also an allusion of faith and tranquility amidst ordeals.

An interpretation of the French sculptor Auguste Rodin’s timeless bronze sculpture, “Le Penseur,” Lubanga’s “Thinker” embodies the significance of knowledge and philosophy in a sleek design.

A circular figure in the garden of the Ayala’s latest expansion, “The Family” is a stone-cast masterpiece highlighting the importance of society’s basic unit. With forms suggesting oneness and connectivity, the artwork reflects the significance of family being an integral part of the Filipino culture.

Launched first in 2009 in Greenbelt Makati, Art Park collaborates with notable artists to transform Ayala Malls’ spaces into one magnificent canvas and fluid gallery where art can best be experienced up close. It aims to let people appreciate the wonders of art in an informal and unrestrained setting./ PR
