Officials from the cities of Cebu and Mandaue are set to conduct a joint inspection of the Cebu City’s abattoir which has been the subject of several issues recently.

According to Cebu City Legal Officer Jerone Castillo, both local government units agreed to help each other in solving the issues about the abattoir and the footbridges on Mahiga Creek.

“The meeting was so cordial. We really discussed the issue and we came to an agreement that will be cooperating in solving the issues,” Castillo said.

Last Wednesday, Castillo, together with City Administrator Lucelle Mercado and City Treasurer Diwa Cuevas met with their counterparts in Mandue – legal officer Giovanni Tianero, administrator James Abadia and treasurer Regal Oliva at the office of Mandaue City Mayor Jonas Cortes.

Castillo said they agreed to conduct a joint inspection of the slaughterhouse to personally see and discuss the specific concerns raised by Mandaue City.

Mandaue City recently raised that Cebu City did not settle its property and business taxes for operation the slaughterhouse and it also did not have permits and for health, sanitary and environment concerns.

Castillo added the city has started “remedial measures” in improving the facility which is located at barangay Subangdaku in Mandaue City.

Personnel have started cleaning the area although bigger improvements and renovations still have to be made.

On the issue of tax delinquency, Castillo said they asked Mandaue City for some time for them to review the legal bases of taxing the facility.
