CPA objects to opening Baclig Street

The Cebu Ports Authority (CPA) objected to Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama’s request to open Baclig Road to motorists, saying it will only worsen the congestion in the ports.
“At present, traffic going in and out of the port is bad and it will get even worse if Baclig road is opened,” CPA Deputy Manager Yusop Uckung told Cebu Daily News.
Uckung said the road should only be available to cargo trucks which are being used for commercial purposes.
“It’s a difficult balancing of interests, the interests of the commuters and motorists or the economy of Cebu which will suffer if cargoes cannot move in and out of the port with dispatch,” he said. Uckung said other routes must be considered by the city.
Uckung said Rama’s request to scrap the P10 fee for the temporary vehicle pass (TVP) needs discussion with the CPA board.
“It’s the board who will decide whether or not to scrap the fee,” he said.
The CPA is collecting the P10 TVP for every vehicle entering the port area without an annual vehicle pass.
Those with annual stickers are not obliged to pay the TVP. Uckung said the TVP is used to fund the maintenance of the ports’ entryways.
