Philippine weather: Expect cloudy skies, rain showers 

MANILA, Philippines — The weather in the Philippines will feature overcast skies and rain showers throughout Monday, October 16, 2023, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said.

Pagasa attributed the anticipated weather to three weather systems affecting the country: northeasterly, localized thunderstorms, and a trough of an LPA.

In an early morning public forecast on Monday, Pagasa weather specialist Obet Badrina said Batanes, Cagayan, Isabela, and Apayao will have partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated light rains on Monday due to the northeasterly surface wind flow.

“‘Yan po [pulu-pulong mahihinang pag-ulan dulot ng northeasterly surface wind flow] ay isa sa mga characteristics o katangian kapag papunta na tayo sa panahon ng amihan, wala na po masyado mga pagkidlat o mga pagkulog,” explained Badrina.

(That [scattering light rains caused by northeasterly surface wind flow] is one of the characteristics when we are going to the northerly season, there will not be much lightning or thunder.)

He likewise said that Metro Manila and other parts the country may expect partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers or thunderstorms due to the localized thunderstorms. Pagasa advised affected residents to stay alert for possible flash floods and landslides, especially in low-lying and mountainous areas.

Badrina further reported that overcast skies with scattered rain showers and thunderstorms will prevail over Palawan because of the trough or extension of the low pressure area (LPA) outside of the Philippine area of responsibility.

“Huli itong [LPA] namataan 980 kilometers kanluran ng Central Luzon. Hindi naman ito inaasahan na makaka-apekto sa ating bansa dahil ang movement nito ay papunta sa mainland Asia,” he noted.

(This [LPA] was last spotted 980 kilometers west of Central Luzon. It is not expected to affect our country because its movement is going to mainland Asia.)

As for the country’s seaboards, Pagasa said it is not raising any gale warnings over these areas but urged sailors and fishermen, especially those with small boats, to remain cautious while at sea.
