Pacquiao fans on losing bets: ‘No hard feelings’
A Cebuano engineer didn’t mind losing around P23,000 for betting on boxing champion Manny Pacquiao last Sunday.
“Of course, no hard feelings. Ako, being a sugarol ma-manok or any kind of sugal, naanad na ko ana (As a gambler, I’m used to losing). Besides, I know my limit,” he said.
Ben (not his real name) shelled out P10,000 cash yesterday to pay someone in Manila, who placed his bet on Floyd Mayweather Jr. His bet was on top of the P100,000 placed by a sales supervisor of a feed company, also on Pacquiao.
He also sent $300 (roughly P13,000) by bank transfer to a cousin in Massachusetts, USA. The engineer and his cousin lost to a doctor.
Ben said he reviewed the video of the Pacquiao-Mayweather fight thrice on Sunday evening. Based on his own scorecard, he said Pacquiao really lost to Mayweather, but only by a few points.
He said Pacquiao’s right shoulder injury may have contributed to his defeat. But he also noted that Mayweather was “very smart and naughty.”
“My scorecard is 115-113 for Mayweather. What was missing (from Pacquiao) was his right hook or the so-called vanilla ice punch, maybe because of his right shoulder injury,” he said.
“Pero mas maayo ug gameplan stragegy ni Mayweather (But Mayweather had a better gameplan). Mayweather is indeed the smartest and naughtiest boxer in the world,” he added.
Meanwhile, a businessman from Lutac, Naga City lost P3,000 for favoring Pacquiao, said he immediately accepted defeat and simply walked out of the SM Cinema in silence after the fight.
“Ako lang gikatawa aron di magsakit ang akong dughan (I just laughed it off so I won’t feel bad),” the businessman said.
A 33-year-old female hotel employee said she immediately approached her male colleague, who had accepted her P100 bet for Pacquiao, after the fight. She promised to pay him with her next salary.
“Ako siyang giingnan nga utangon lang sa nako (I told him I will pay later),” she laughed.
She said Mayweather won using dirty tactics.
Meanwhile, a police officer who placed a P500 bet on Mayweather said he was confident that he was going to win as the fight progressed.
“Nagtan-aw ko per round, mas daghan ug puntos si Mayweather (I noticed that in each round, Mayweather scored more points),” he said.
He defended Mayweather’s strategy to run and hug Pacquiao, pointing out that Mike Tyson even bit off part of the ear of Evander Holyfield.
“Di man sa ingon nga Pinoy nga kinahanglan ta modapig niya. Sa sports, apil na sa ilang paagi kon unsaon nila pagduwa (Being Pinoy doesn’t mean we have to bet on Pacquiao. Having a strategy to win is part of the game),” he said.
