Cebu Daily News won Best in Photojournalism among  daily community papers nationwide in the  2014 Civic Journalism Community Press Awards of the Philippine Press Institute.

Contest judges said the paper was able “to maintain a high quality of visual reporting at par with national and international standards while still maintaining a local cultural stamp.”

It was the fifth time for CDN to receive the national award for outstanding photojournalism from PPI after bagging it in 2002, 2003, 2005, 2008 and 2013 with striking and socially relevant images by its staff lensmen led by photo editor Tonee Despojo.

Publisher and acting editor in chief Eileen Mangubat received the trophy on behalf of the paper from PPI chairman-president Jesus Dureza and Dr. Chito Salazar of Phinma Corp., chairman of the board of judges, in the award ceremony at the Diamond Hotel in Manila.

Newspapers outside Metro Manila took center stage last night as the PPI, the national association of newspapers in the country, recognized daily and weekly community papers in six fields.

In the daily category, the Edge Davao won Best Edited Newspaper, Best Environmental Reporting, and Best in Culture, Arts and History Reporting.

Sun.Star Cebu won Best Editorial Page, while Sun.Star Davao clinched the Best in Business and Economic Reporting.

In the weekly category, Baguio Midland Courier won two awards for Best in Business and Economic Reporting and Best in Photojournalism. The Baguio Chronicle received the Best Editorial Page Award. The Best in Environmental Reporting

Award went to BusinessWeek Mindanao while the Best in Culture, Arts and History Reporting award was given to another weekly, The Bohol Chronicle, the lone winner from the Visayas.

Winners received trophies and cash prizes. Plaques of merit were handed out to all 16 finalists from Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao.

The awards capped the 19th National Press Forum with the theme “Media and Election: Expanding the Discourse.”

Christian Monsod, former chairman of the Commission on Elections, gave the keynote speech.  Resource speakers from Pulse Asia Research Inc. and the Marketing and Opinion Research Society discussed the science and value of polling.

The contest screening was done by academic institutions at the regional level by the Asian Institute of Journalism and Communication for Luzon, the Institute of Communication of the Colegio de San Juan de Letran for the Visayas, and the

Department of Journalism of the Polytechnic University of the Philippines for entries from Mindanao.

The national board of judges was headed by Dr. Chito Salazar Jr. of Phinma with members Dr. Joyce Arriola, journalism professor of the University of Sto. Tomas, Jose Bayani Bayolon, vice president for corporate communications of Nickel

Asia Corp., Undersecretary Analiza Teh of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, Estrellita Juiliano-Tamano of the National Commission on Culture and the Arts, and Luis T. Liwanag, multimedia director of NPPA Images.

In its annual membership meeting,  Dureza was reelected to a second year term as chairman-president, along with Raul Pangalanan (Philippine Daily Inquirer publisher) as vice president, and Al Pedroche (Pilipino Star Ngayon) as treasurer and Eileen Mangubat (Cebu Daily News) as secretary.

Partnerships were also signed with PPI for new programs with Oceana Philippines for sustainable fisheries, Plan International for child-friendly governance, and the Asian Human Rights Commission.
