Wednesday morning fire hits classroom in CTU Main Campus

CEBU CITY, Philippines – A fire broke out in one of the classrooms at the Cebu Technological University (CTU) Main Campus in Cebu City on Wednesday morning, June 19.

The incident resulted to the loss of properties estimated to be worth P72,000.

Fortunately, no one was injured when the fire broke out.

In a report, the Cebu City Fire Station (CCFS) said that the fire broke out in a second floor classroom of the College of Technology building at the CTU Main Campus located at the corner of M.J. Cuenco Ave. and R.Palma St. in Brgy. San Roque, Cebu City.

Responders raised the fire alarm to first alarm at 9:35 a.m. and managed to put out the fire at 9:46 a.m.

Senior Fire Officer 2 (SFO2) Wendell Villanueva, information officer of the CCFS, said that students and school personnel who were inside the campus when the fire broke out were immediately evacuated to a safe place.

Villanueva said that school personnel called their office after they noticed the fire through their closed-circuit television (CCTV) recordings.

He said the fire immediately spread because of the presence of curtains inside the affected classroom.

This early, fire investigators suspect that electrical short circuit may have caused the fire but this theory is still subject to further investigation.

Meanwhile, Villanueva is urging the administration of the different colleges and universities here to always have fire extinguishers ready in case of emergencies.

“Ato gyud nang gi-require nga every compartment, duna tay gi-tener [nga] fire prevention equipment like fire extinguisher. Unya atong gi-remind ang mga schools to revisit their electrical installation, especially sa panimalay. Ato untang i-pacheck ang atong electrical installation, electrical wiring sa mga licensed electrician para sa maong paagi, makalikay ta sa sunog,” he said.
