Mandaue City to install culvert under Tipolo Creek bridge
MANDAUE CITY, Philippines — The Mandaue City Engineering Office (CEO) will be installing another culvert under a bridge connecting to Tipolo Creek.
On Wednesday morning, June 19, a few areas of Mandaue experienced below-the-knee flooding along Lopez Jaena St. in Barangay Tipolo and at Mayor A.S. Fortuna Memorial Elementary School in Barangay Guizo because of heavy rain.
Fortunately, the floodwaters subsided within just over an hour.
This is a little bit faster compared to before. The water level is also lower than before, which could reach waist level.
CEO Maintenance Division Head Engr. Louie Rey Biton believes that this is the result of their continuous declogging and desilting operations.
Biton said that they still need to install a culvert in a small bridge located in a private lot near Lopez Jaena St. in Barangay Tipolo. The floodwater from the manholes passes through the culvert.
Currently, the bridge only has one culvert, and the floodwater cannot smoothly flow across the Tipolo Creek.
“Ma-imbudo man gud didto ang tubig. Tan-awon ninyo ganina bale taga liog na sa creek ang tubig samot pa gyud didto (bridge). Murag ma-funnel ba, kinahanglan nato i-improve ang agianan,” said Biton.
Biton said that they will start the installation on Wednesday, June 19, and it is expected to be completed within two weeks.
He also thanked the owner of the lot who permitted them and even provided the new culvert.
Last month, the city engineering office, along with the Department of Public Works and Highways, also declogged, desilted, and tracked down the manholes near the outfall of Tipolo Creek located inside the private lot.
Mandaue’s Task Force APAS (Atoang Problema, Atoang Sulbad) has been actively clearing waterways in preparation for the rainy season.
