KENNY Demecillo, the dynamite-fisted, 22-year-old Omega Boxing Gym star, stopped Daryl Basadre in two rounds last Sunday, to win the World Boxing Association (WBA) Oceania bantamweight title at the Robinsons Place in General Santos City.
Referee Ramuel Ovalo stopped the carnage at 2:54 mark of the second round after seeing Basadre getting mauled by Demecillo in the main event of GenSan Fury I.
Demecillo finished his foe with a cracking left hook.
Demecillo, a Cebu City-based fighter from Iligan City, improved to nine wins with six knockouts against three loses and a draw while Basadre of General Santos City suffered only his second loss against 14 wins including 10 knockouts and one draw.
Basadre’s promoter Jim Claude Manangquil said referee Ovalo erred in stopping the fight but Demecillo’s training Christopher “Pingping” Tepora believed otherwise.
“Kung wala pa to gihunong ni referee Ovalo, samotan to ug kulata iyang boxer, wa hibaw-i ma disgrasya pa nuon to. Nagplano sila ug rematch karong September, andam man pud mi ug rematch,” said Tepora.
WBA Oceania supervisor Ferlin Marsh of New Zealand agrees with Ovalo’s decision.
Meanwhile, Demecillo’s stable mate Jerry Castroverde lost to Rimar Metuda via fourth round knockout in their fight set for eight rounds.
Metuda floored Castroverde twice in the second round but the latter retaliated by knocking down the former in the fourth. Metuda however, proved too strong.
