USC shuttlers win in Bacolod tilt

Shuttlers from the University of San Carlos (USC) Warriors put up a great performance in the 2nd Sun Cellular National Juniors Badminton Tournament-Visayas Leg held last June 12-14 in Bacolod City.

The Warriors, led by Carl Bernard Bejasa, finished with two gold medals, five silvers and three bronze medals in the three-day tournament.

Bejasa accounted for all of the Warriors’ gold medals. He first dominated the boys’ 15 Under singles category, winning over teammate  Lyrden Laborte, 21-8 21-12.

Bejasa then partnered with James Ryan Villarante in the boys’ 15U doubles competition and won his second gold medal by defeating Justine Daniel Anglo and Sean Justin Regida De Jesus, 21-14 21-12.

Laborte clinched his second silver medal after being defeated by John Mark Valenzuela, 21-16, 18-21,20-22, in the boys’ 17U singles finals.

Chelsea Katrina Akiatan also settled for a silver medal in the girls’ 13U singles event after losing to Katrina Mae Consing, 21-23, 21-17, 17-21.

In the 15U mixed doubles, James Ryan Villarante and Jazmine Kaye Benemerito got a silver medal while Michelle Fernandez and Laville Laborte also settled for a silver in the 17U girls’ doubles.

Bronze Medalists for USC were Jazmine Kaye Benemerito (15U girls singles),  Michelle Fernandez (17U girls singles), and Paul James Ouano and Mitzi Montalvo (17U mixed doubles).
