Green comfort rooms are being built in two cities and two towns in Cebu province.

This is a way for the Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority (Tieza) to help Cebu’s tourism industry, said Tieza chief operating officer Mark Lapid.

Lapid said during his speech at a cooperative forum at the Capitol Social Hall yesterday that the green rest rooms are being constructed in Cebu City, Carcar City, Argao town in southern Cebu and Tuburan town in northern Cebu.

Tieza has partnered with the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) for the project where financially-challenged families will be hired as caretakers of the rest rooms.

“We’re partnering with the DSWD for them to give us the names of poor families who will take over the restrooms for overall care and maintenance. It will serve as their source of income at the same time,” he in Filipino.

He said he considered it a green restroom because the tourists can now have a place along the hghway to relieve themselves.

He said Cebu is the number one tourist destination, and it is good that they start building good comfort rooms at the highways to serve local and foreign tourists visiting this places.

“For me it’s still number one. It’s competing with Boracay. Pero destination na itong Cebu, kasama siya sa route ng mga cruise tourism, ilang vessels na ang nag-do-dock dito. Sa Boracay yata ang galing nila or Palawan then they come here, then to Kalanggaman, Leyte before they go straight to Singapore and then on the other route nila. They go to Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, then go back to Hong kong,” he said.

He said the green comfort rooms are scheduled to be completed in time for the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (Apec) summit to be held in Cebu this August.
