The volume of private vehicles registered in Mandaue City increased by 45 percent since 2012, a clear factor in traffic congestion experienced today.
Official figures show that private-owned cars outnumber jeepneys and other public utility vehicles by over 20 times.
In 2014, for every PUV in in Mandaue, there were 21 private cars recorded by the Land Transportation Office (LTO).
“We cannot just stop consumers from buying a car because it is also their right of property,” said LTO-7 Regional Director Arnel Tancinco.

Based on LTO records, Mandaue has even more vehicles than Cebu City, where registration went down by 18,000 PUV units and 8,000 private units over a two-year span.
“We should remember that public utility vehicles cause obstruction along the routes. One unit is plying the same route at least five times a day,” Tancinco told Cebu Daily News.
Cebu City has more PUVs than Mandaue City but its volume sharply decreased over recent years.
“Some operators don’t renew their franchise after expiration. Another reason is that we need to balance the interest and the needs of the public transportation,” said Reynaldo Elnar, regional director of the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB-7).
