Van driver freed, won’t face charges for mishap
The driver of the Isuzu dropside van accused of causing the 10-vehicle pileup that caused the death of a basketball coach and injuring 10 persons in barangay Canduman, Mandaue City last Saturday morning was released by the police yesterday afternoon.
P02 Nelson Sadile, traffic investigator of the Mandaue City Police Office, said the victims, including the family of Manolet Subang who died in the collision, agreed to a settlement with van driver Nestor Isobal. No charges will be filed against Isobal.
“The families of the victims accepted that what happened was really an accident,” Sadile said.
Edelisa Alone, wife of one of the injured victims, said she was contented with Isobal’s payment of her husband’s medical expenses.
Nestor’s wife Cherry Isobal said she is asking the victims not to pursue the filing of charges against her husband for they are willing to settle with them.
Police said Cherry paid P54,030 to the families of Subang and four other victims.
Cherry also promised to pay for their medical expenses and repair of the damaged vehicles.
To help avoid more mishaps in the busy intersection, the Traffic Enforcement Agency of Mandaue (TEAM) will install traffic lights and closed-circuit TV cameras in J.P. Rizal St. corner H. Abellana St. and 11 other intersections.
“We will put traffic light so that motorists and public utility vehicle drivers can see the intersection ahead and avoid overspeeding,” acting TEAM head Glenn Antigua said.
The Bids and Awards Committee will soon name the winning contractor for traffic lights and CCTV cameras, Antigua said.
Antigua said they placed a signage stating the speed limit to be followed while passing at J.P. Rizal Street.
He said the road accident occurred due to brake failure experienced by Isobal’s Isuzu van.
“Even if we deploy enforcers in the area, it wouldn’t stop the van from causing the accident,” Antigua said.
The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) said they will inspect the area where the road accident happened.
DPWH Regional Director Ador Canlas said he ordered the DPWH 6th District Engineering Office to visit the area and check what needs to be done to improve the road.
