Canoy ready to run, remains loyal to LP

By: Michelle Joy L. Padayhag September 09,2015 - 02:04 AM

SAN Fernando Mayor Antonio Canoy is ready for whatever decision the Liberal Party (LP) may issue concerning its members  and allies, the Alayon party in Cebu’s 1st district.

While there is no scheduled meeting or dialogue with President Benigno Aquino III, LP standard-bearer Mar Roxas and Cebu Gov. Hilario Davide III with the local LP members and the Alayon party, Canoy said they are ready for one.

“It’s still hanging. Let us just wait for any discussions or meeting. I hope this would be resolved soon,” he said.

Canoy’s congressional bid and LP district chairmanship was challenged with the LP alliance with the Alayon party.

“The Alayon party even supported One Cebu in the 2010 elections and did not support Roxas during the vice presidential race,” Canoy said.

He said the party supported former senator Manny Villar’s presidential bid.

Incumbent Rep. Gerald Anthony “Samsam” Gullas earlier said he will step back from being LP district chairman so long as the first district is a free zone in the 2016 elections.

“I am a loyal Liberal Party (LP) member since 2010,” Canoy said when asked during yesterday’s 888 News Forum if it is possible for him to run either in a different party or as independent.

Mayoral candidates who will run in Canoy’s slate next year are incumbent Mayor Johnny V. Delos Reyes (Talisay City), former Mayor Marlo Canada (Minglanilla), incumbent councilor Vince Del

Mar (City of Naga), incumbent Vice Mayor Miguel Antonio Canoy (San Fernando) and incumbent councilor Joji Chan (Sibonga).

When asked what made him decide to run for Congress against the young Gullas, he said the first district needs new leadership.

“The first district needs new leaders. The Gullases were into politics since 1970s but what have they done?”

He also questioned the P400 million project intended for bridges in the first district which were not finished.

“The problem too is that good roads are being repaired,” Canoy said.
