By: PR November 05,2015 - 02:59 AM

Some 300 residents and volunteers gathered 2.6 metric tons of garbage from Luknay Creek in San Fernando town, southern Cebu during a clean-up drive organized recently by Taiheiyo Cement Philippines Inc. (TCPI).

Before the event that bannered the theme “Save Our Seas”, residents, volunteers and local officials gathered at the TCPI recreation center at 7 a.m. to get their T-shirts and cleaning paraphernalia.

They were divided into four groups. Each group was assigned to clean upper Luknay, Lower Luknay, the pier area and the coastal area.

TCPI and materials supplier Solid Earth Development Corp. (SEDC) also donated a minicab to collect garbage along the creek in barangay South Poblacion.

“We requested the residents to keep their garbage and wait for the minicab to pick it up,” said Dwight Avila, environment and safety officer of TCPI and event organizer.

“Through this initiative, we hope to minimize, if not eradicate, the indiscriminate disposal of garbage into Luknay to prevent flooding during heavy downpour,” he said.

Environment and Safety Department head Romeo Gebilaguin and TCPI senior vice president Kazuhiko Ichizawa thanked the volunteers for joining the company in keeping the environment clean and safe for everyone.

South Poblacion barangay captain Dioscoro Esbra commended TCPI and SEDC for the yearly initiative. He urged residents to keep Luknay creek clean.

After the clean-up, the volunteers were treated to lunch.
