Ex-Customs clerk convicted of defrauding gov’t of P1.2 M in taxes

A FORMER clerk of the Bureau of Customs in Lapu-Lapu City was convicted by the court on charges of malversation of funds for pocketing P1.2 million in government funds two decades ago.

Crispiniano Ligan, a former collection officer assigned at the Mactan Export Processing Zone, was found guilty of misappropriating P980,125 worth of customs duties and taxes as well as falsifying at least 21 official receipts worth P197,564.

He was also found liable of reducing by P29,593 the customs duties and taxes of Philippine Izumi Corp.

Ligan was sentenced to 40 years in jail and ordered to pay P1,219,052.99 to the government.

He is out on bail and hasn’t attended court hearings.
