CEBUANA setter Ma. Deanna Izabella Wong has finally seen her long-time dream come true as she was named to the final roster of the Ateneo de Manila University Lady Eagles squad that will kick off their title-retention bid in the UAAP with a match against rivals National University this Sunday at the Arena in San Juan.
Wong, the 17-year old product of the University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R), was recruited by Ateneo’s brain trust led by head coach Tai Bundit to back up starting setter Jia Morado.
Now, not only will the 5-foot-8 stunner get to play at her “dream school,” she will also get the chance of a lifetime to play at the grandest stage in all of collegiate sports.
The development elated the youngster who exclaimed as much in an exclusive talk with Cebu Daily News.
“I feel happy not only in making the lineup but also because it made my parents happy and proud. It’s an honor representing Cebu and representing my beloved alma mater, USJ-R,” shared Wong after the team’s practice session wrapped up.
Though she doesn’t expect much playing time coming her way given the fact that she’s only in her first year, Wong said that she will be absorbing whatever she can from the many veterans on the team led of course by skipper and superstar Alyssa Valdez, co-captain Amy Ahomiro and the aforementioned Morado. Wong also promised to be ready when her number is called at any time during the season.
“I expect myself to perform well whenever I get the chance to play inside the court,” she added.
The Lady Eagles are looking to capture a third straight title this season.
