Rama to review PWD cash aid ordinance

By: Jose Santino S. Bunachita March 07,2016 - 09:43 PM

WHILE saying he agrees “in principle” to increasing the financial assistance for persons with disabilities (PWDs), Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama said he may veto portions of the ordinance.

The mayor said he has to review the ordinance authored by Councilor Eugenio Gabuya Jr. that was recently approved by the City Council, increasing the P5,000 yearly assistance to PWDs to P12,000.

“There’s nothing wrong in increasing. I’m not against it. But we have to be very clear. Who will be given? And how will it be defined?” Rama told reporters yesterday.

He said there has to be established criteria on how a PWD can  qualify to get the assistance since some cases may not be as bad as others. Right now, there are over 9,000 registered PWDs in the city.

Rama said there may be an across-the-board increase of the financial assistance just like what happened to  registered senior citizens in the city.

Danilo Omayan, president of the Cebu City Federation of Persons with Disabilities, welcomed the approval of the ordinance.

Omayan said they will try to meet with Mayor Rama to convince him that the increase of the assistance should still be uniform for PWDs since most of them find it difficult to land jobs.
