Sinulog hoop slated Jan. 23

COLLEGIATE basketball players and fans alike who are itching for hardcourt action will not have to wait for too long as the Sinulog Cup Inter Collegiate Basketball Tournament 2014 gets underway on Jan. 23 at the Cebu Coliseum.
Moreover, organizers of the tournament hope that this development will be the catalyst in the renaissance of Cebu’s commercial basketball scene with the upcoming revival of the Cebu Basketball Association—considered to be the premier commercial basketball league in the south during its heydays several years ago.
The teams that were invited to play in the Sinulog Cup are the top four teams from the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. They are the defending champions University of the Visayas, which sources say is undergoing a massive revamp of its lineup, the Philippine Collegiate Champions League runners-up Southwestern University, the University of San Carlos and the University of San Jose-Recoletos.
Tournament organizer Rico Navarro said the tournament will have a meeting tomorrow, 11:30 a.m. at the Yayoy’s Grill and Restobar.
The teams will play a single round-robin during the elimination round with the top two teams advancing to the winner-take-all championship game. At stake for the champion is a whopping P50,000. Runners up will receive P30,000, P15,000 and P5,000, respectively.
Navarro said he hopes this competition will usher in the revival of the CBA so as to give talented players an avenue to grow and showcase their skills.
