TO strengthen the implementation of the Youth Development Session (YDS), the Department of Social Welfare and Development in Central Visayas (DSWD 7) is training teachers and volunteer facilitators to help address adolescence issues.
YDS is the parallel intervention that compliments the Family Development Session (FDS) implemented by DSWD through the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program.
It is a modular session that is expected to help equip the youth with appropriate knowledge, attitude and skills to face developmental challenges.
“We recognize that the youth of today are confronted with various challenges and some of them do not have the appropriate skills and proper attitude to face these challenges. Through the YDS, we are hopeful that we will be able to save our children from the many ills of our society, such as drug addiction and early pregnancy,” said DSWD Secretary Corazon Soliman during the national launching of YDS in Tandang Sora National High School last year.
YDS was launched in Central Visayas last October in partnership with the National Youth Commission (NYC). The ceremony was attended by NYC chairperson and DSWD Undersecretary Gregorio Ramon Tingson together with NYC commissioners Jose Sixto “Dingdong” Dantes III, Jo Jan Paul Peñol and Percival Cendana. It is currently piloted in 34 towns and cities of Cebu, Bohol and Siquijor.
Topics discussed during YDS were changing body, teenage pregnancy, pornography, peer pressure and substance abuse, among others.
The YDS will be included in classroom instructions during weekdays.
YDS modules include Social Preparation, Change: Metamorphosis of a Person, Your Changing Body, The Changing Mind, Body Image and Healthy Lifestyle, Your Changing Emotions, Expressing Your Emotions, Changing Roles and Ex—-pectations, Defining Your Indentity, Appreciating Your Self-Worth and Discovering Your Destiny.
