Prayer for Rodrigo Duterte

Illustratioon_29MAY2016_SUNDAY_renelevera_RODRIGO DUTERTE(2)Lord, we present to you this man, Rodrigo,

No one has walked the land quite like this gringo,

A native cowboy who believes in Jesus,

I think, because his mouth is full of curses,

Although there might be more honesty there

Than on respectful lips full of hot air,

But, Lord, the Holy Gospels do impart

That the mouth speaks from the wealth of the heart,

But who can judge this except yourself, Lord,

Your ears, all-hearing, record every word

And measure it against that yardstick, truth.

Still, Lord, Rodrigo’s language is uncouth,

And if you find my unease evident

It is because he is our President.

Lord, he’s a man who thinks little of killing

(That was what he said when he was campaigning),

Of course, he meant slaying the criminals,

Above all those who disregard the signals

For them to stop–but Lord all life belongs

To you, who heal and rectify all wrongs,

But people cannot wait, they are impatient,

And the police and courts are inefficient.

So hang the law, we all want to be safe.

Are we, each of us, really that naif?

The sinner, said the French poet Charles Péguy,

Is at the heart of Christianity.

I admit, Lord, that we have all done wrong,

Even the saints, they sing a sinner’s song,

But deeper, wider, higher than all this,
God’s mercy waits for us, the Father’s kiss,

The Book of Lamentations keeps reminding–

God’s love’s not spent, is renewed every morning.

Forgive him, Lord, if he did what he said,

Forgive us, Lord, the ill thoughts in our head.

Lord, bless and guide our leader from the south.

His heart’s in the right place? But not his mouth,

Which last he said was just for politics,

His cursing and tough stance no more than antics.

Still his compassion has spawned many stories.

Who is he really, why the endless queries?

Of course, you know Rodrigo, Lord, the same

That as a boy was sent to call your name

And ask forgiveness by a concerned mother,
Nanay Soling, after a misdemeanor

(And this was when he faced the Crucified,

And, in his boyish innocence, he tried

To assure Jesus of his company

As he performed the imposed penalty–

Kneeling before him who was sacrificed,

His arms outstretched as were the arms of Christ.
