LOOKING to strengthen the grassroots development of Cebu’s countryside, the Cebu Provincial Sports Commission will hold a running event and futsal tournament in August as part of Cebu Province’s 447th founding anniversary.

The two sporting events were officially launched yesterday at the Cebu Provincial Capitol headed by Cebu Provincial Sports Commission Executive Director Atty. Ramil Abing, Administration Officer Brando Velasquez and football coach Eleazar Toledo.

The founding anniversary run is slated on Aug. 28. It will start and end at the Cebu Provincial Capitol grounds. The futsal tournament, on the other hand, will be held on Aug. 13 and 14 at the Minglanilla Sports Complex.

Organizers are aiming to draw around a thousand runners for the footrace. They are targeting participants from towns and municipalities around Cebu province.

According to Abing, they hope to find potential runners and futsal players for Cebu province’s team in the Batang Pinoy meet during the two events.

The longest distance in the founding anniversary run will be 20 kilometers. There will also be 10k, 5k and 3k distances. Around P150,000 worth of cash prizes will be at stake for the running event.

Registration will start today at the legislative building of the Cebu Provincial Capitol and at the Cebu City Sports Center.

Registration fee is pegged at P500 for the 20k and P300 for the 10k distance. The 5k and 3k categories are free.

Toledo, meanwhile, said that they are expecting to draw around 20 teams for the futsal tournament, which is sanctioned by the Cebu Football Association (CFA).
