Karla Fatima Hossain’s family woke early yesterday to travel from Carcar City to the Al-Khariah Mosque in Barangay Mambaling, Cebu City for a celebration.
It was one of the holiest and joyous days for the Muslim world, the celebration of the Eid al-Fitr, which marked the end of Ramadan or the Islamic holy month of fasting.
Hossain, who converted to Islam only two years ago, was overwhelmed with emotion as she and several hundreds of persons from different Muslim communities in Cebu listened to the preaching of Imam Aladdin Ubpon.
Imam Ubpon said the Eid al-Fitr is not only a culmination of fasting observed by Muslims all over the world, but also a time for family reunions and renewal of faith.
Ubpon said they also prayed for world peace, safety of the people during tragedy and Allah’s guidance for the newly elected officials of the Philippines.
Another group of Muslims also trooped to Plaza Independencia to celebrate Eid al-Fitr.
Association of Cebu Muslim Entrepreneurs and Professionals Inc. (ACMEP) president Datu Abubacar Gunang, who was at the Plaza Independencia celebration, said they hoped the administration of President Rodrigo Duterte would succeed in eliminating all kinds of criminality and in passing the Bangsamoro Basic Law (BBL), which was not realized during the administration of former president Benigno Simeon Aquino III.
Gunang also expressed their support to the administration of Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña and his move to combat criminality in the city.
He said they had formed the “Osmeña Cares” movement that advocated for keeping the city clean, green, peaceful and drug-free.
